WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A QUALITY PROGRAM

At Belle's and Beau's Academy we know that finding the right child care is one of the most important decisions that a parent can make. The following is a list of questions and items to look for when researching quality childcare.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR:

  • Is the center clean?
  • Is there an open door policy that encourages parents to visit and participate in center activities at any time?
  • Are you and your child greeted when you enter the building? Does it feel “warm and fuzzy” when you enter the building and the classrooms?
  • Do the children in the center appear happy and relaxed?
  •

    QUESTIONS TO ASK:

  • Does the center offer nutritious snacks and lunch? Are the menus available to parents?
  • Do staff members sit with the children at lunchtime to model appropriate manners, choices, and positive behaviors?
  • How is discipline handled in my child’s classroom?
  • Are toys and materials disinfected on a regular basis?
  • Do teacher/child ratios meet or exceed state requirements?
  • Is there a staff member present at all times who has been trained in CPR and first aid?
  • Is there a security system that restricts access to the facility?
  • What is your policy for releasing children to people other than their parents/guardians?
  • How do you promote my child’s self-esteem, confidence and independence?
  • Are children encouraged to try new things and challenge themselves?
  • Do children receive positive reinforcement for accomplishing their goals?
  • What is the structure and routine in my child’s classroom each day?
  • Will my child be with the same teacher each day?
  • Are the children offered a variety of meaningful learning choices throughout the day?
  • Are the activities and programs developmentally appropriate and geared toward the needs to the children in each classroom?
  • How are lesson plans created? Do the teachers get to create activities for their particular classroom and children?
  • How are needs, ideas and activities communicated to the parents/guardian on a daily and monthly basis?
  • Is there flexibility and personalization in the classroom to meet the needs of my child?
  • Are the toys and materials age appropriate for the classroom?
  • What is the sick policy for children? What is the procedure for a child that becomes sick at school?
  • Are there a variety of outdoor activities offered during the day?
  • Are assessments done at least twice a year to measure your child’s growth and development?
  • Are extra activities like karate, dance, and gymnastics offered? Is there a pool available for swimming and water activities offered for the toddlers in the summer?
